Max, an operative for the Watch for Another Identity Theft, opens his eyes one day to find himself in the afterlife. The Ghostworld. Great. If that wasn’t bad enough, everyone he encounters there thinks he is Wake Marrow, his office nemesis.

He is given a job at the Specter City Possession Institute, where his role is to travel back to the Lifeworld to temporarily take over the bodies of those still alive in order to complete missions delegated by the Institute.

As he works under the supervision of his instructor, the wise-cracking and quite possibly attractive Trixie, he and his coworkers - a motley crew of the also recently departed - discover a sinister plot threatening the progression of souls moving on to the next plane. Working together in an attempt to resolve this, the group uncovers an even greater threat to both worlds.

Specter City eBook Jesse Moore

I was initially intrigued by the idea of this story. It reminds me of the recent movie RIPD, in that the departed souls work for an corporate type entity on the other side and try to right wrongs in the world of the living. Despite having an interesting premise, I soon found myself losing interest. Here's why:

-Despite being quite skilled at "world-building" I found the author took a route here which is whimsical to the point of being silly. For example: The doorman in Max's apartment lobby who starts every sentence with "MMMMMMmmmmmYES!" ended up being more annoying than entertaining. Elevators in this world have personalities and can talk, yet rarely do they have anything entertaining to say. Even alarm clocks are self aware and complain about being hit in the morning. Douglas Adams could pull off wackiness like this but it isn't easy to do, and in this story I found it more grating than entertaining.

-Some of the characters are over-the-top whimsical, too. Like Mayor Major Toad and Dean Dean Dean (the Dean of the school is named Dean Dean, of course.)I am reminded of Alice in Wonderland which also had characters so over the top that they annoyed me.

-The main characters have very few problems as they attempt to go about their missions. There is always some last minute dues ex machina to get them out of any jams they find themselves in. As a result I found it hard to care about their fates. I just knew that they would always be ok in the end.

-The plot becomes convoluted towards the end. I'm all about twists but by the end the plot gets a little ridiculous.

Unlike my hipster friend Amit who also reviewed this book, this is not a book I will be "showing off" to my friends. While some elements of this story does have merit, I found too many other elements to be disagreeable.

Although I personally do not recommend this book, I award it three stars for creativity, good editing and the fact that I imagine there might be some other readers out there who could enjoy this author's whimsical take on the afterlife.

Specter City eBook Jesse Moore Reviews

I was introduced to this book through a friend who had described it like this "sci-fi meets thriller meets humour meets crime meets..." you had me at hello. With those 4 genres already listed I knew I was about to read something right up my alley and it didn't disappoint. The characters in the book are quirky and actually similar to people I know (I should get new friends) and the main character and hero (of sorts) Max, is the sort of guy you would want to have a beer with and laugh at tales of his (mis)adventures.
A great book and well worth the $2.99 I paid to download it onto my kindle. I'm off to find another one of these kindle gems and then show off to my friends that I'm reading stuff from authors they've never heard of...
